A practical incident-response plan for Nigerian teams.
A response plan does not need to begin with complex tools. Start with responsible people, working escalation routes and an accurate record of decisions.
Before a security event
Name a response owner, security lead, legal or DPO reviewer, communications contact and business decision-maker. Maintain emergency contact routes that do not depend on the potentially compromised system. Document logging, backups, service dependencies and supplier contacts.
At the first report
Record who reported the issue, time of discovery, observable symptoms and affected systems. Avoid deleting evidence. Confirm whether urgent containment is needed and who is authorised to approve it.
Containment and investigation
Restrict compromised access, review administrator accounts, preserve relevant evidence and establish the likely scope. Record what is confirmed and what remains uncertain. If customer data may be involved, engage your privacy response personnel.
Legal notification review
Notification duties are fact-specific. Assess applicable Nigerian data protection law, affected individuals, sector rules and other relevant jurisdictions with qualified advisers. Do not assume one deadline applies to every event. Keep a written record of the decision and rationale.
Recovery and post-incident work
Restore through validated procedures and watch for recurrence. Assign corrective-action owners and follow up until changes are evidenced. Review the incident with leadership and update training exercises.
Put the plan into practice
Run a fictional four-stage incident tabletop and download its exercise record.
