Nigeria / Data protection

A practical NDPA preparation checklist.

Nigeria's data protection obligations vary with processing activities and applicable rules. This guide identifies useful preparation work without claiming that checking boxes establishes legal compliance.

Know what personal data you handle

Prepare a map of customer, employee, supplier and service-user information. Identify purposes, collection points, recipients and retention arrangements. This mapping supports better notices and incident investigation.

Document the grounds for processing

Keep an understandable rationale for each processing activity. Review whether consent, contractual necessity, legal obligation or another permitted basis applies; do not assume consent is universally required.

Prepare operational evidence

Organise privacy notices, vendor assessments, access-control records, training attendance, incident logs, relevant impact assessments and data subject request processes.

Assess security and incident readiness

Document controls proportionate to risks: account access, backups, recovery, encryption where appropriate, vendor oversight, breach escalation and legal assessment of notification obligations.

Seek qualified review

Requirements for registration, audits, DPOs, transfers or regulatory engagement depend on the applicable framework and the nature of the organisation. A qualified adviser or eligible DPCO can help verify those duties.
